All garment measurements are taken with the dress laid flat. To convert a flat measurement to circumference, double the flat measurement.
- Bust (pit to pit) — Measure straight across the fullest part of the bodice from one underarm seam to the other. Double that number for the bust circumference. Do not stretch smocked areas while measuring; measure relaxed.
- Waist — Measure across the narrowest (usually the smocked) part of the dress, seam to seam; double for circumference.
- Hips — Measure across the fullest part of the skirt about 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) below the waist; double for circumference.
- Dress length — Measure from the highest point of the shoulder (include the strap/tie anchor) straight down to the hem. For tie-shoulder dresses, measure with the straps tied as you would wear them.
