How to measure

For the best fit, measure both the garment (laid flat) and your body. Use a soft measuring tape, record measurements in inches and centimeters, and always compare to a similar item you already own for reference.

Measuring the garment (laid flat)

  1. Bust / Chest: Lay the cardigan flat and smooth. Measure straight across the front about 1" (2–3 cm) below the armhole from one side seam to the other. Double that number to get the full circumference.
  2. Across back / Shoulder width: If there is a shoulder seam, measure seam-to-seam across the back. If the kimono has a dropped or seamless shoulder, measure from the top of one sleeve edge to the top of the other across the back (this gives the across-back width).
  3. Sleeve length: If there is a shoulder seam, measure from the shoulder seam to the cuff. For kimono/cut-on sleeves with no shoulder seam, measure from the center back at the base of the neck along the top of the shoulder to the cuff to capture the overall sleeve sweep.
  4. Total length: Measure from the highest point at the center back (base of neck) straight down to the hem. For open-front pieces you may also measure center front length from shoulder or collar to hem for comparison.
  5. Hem / Bottom width: Measure straight across the bottom hem and double to get the circumference.
  6. Sleeve opening & armhole: Measure the circumference of the sleeve opening (measure across and double) and the depth of the armhole if relevant.

Measuring your body

  1. Bust / Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your bust with the tape level and comfortably snug.
  2. Across back / shoulders: Measure from the edge of one shoulder (bony point) to the other across the back.
  3. Arm / sleeve length: With your arm relaxed, measure from the center back base of neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist for overall sleeve length.
  4. Torso length: Measure from the base of the neck (center back) down to where you want the cardigan to end.

Fit guidance: Open-front kimonos are designed for a relaxed, drapey fit. Aim for about 4–8 in (10–20 cm) of ease at the bust for a relaxed look; choose 8–12 in (20–30 cm) extra for an oversized silhouette. When between sizes, choose up for more ease or down for a neater drape.

Materials

Open-front kimono cardigans are made from a range of lightweight, drapey fabrics. Below are common materials and their key characteristics so you know what to expect.

  • Viscose / Rayon / Viscose blends — Soft, fluid drape with a silk-like feel. Breathable and great for prints and colors. Can wrinkle and may shrink if washed in hot water; best washed gentle/cold and reshaped while damp.
  • Modal — A type of rayon with excellent softness, strong wet and dry, good drape and colorfastness. Easy to care; machine wash cold on gentle is usually fine.
  • Polyester / Polyester blends — Durable, colorfast, and wrinkle-resistant. Often blended to improve shape retention and reduce shrinkage. Machine washable; dries quickly.
  • Cotton & Cotton blends — Breathable and comfortable; can be more structured unless blended with drapey fibers. May shrink slightly if not washed according to label.
  • Lycra / Elastane / Spandex (small %) — Added for stretch and recovery. Helps the cardigan keep its shape; avoid high heat when washing or ironing to preserve stretch.
  • Linen blends — Light and breathable with a natural texture; prone to natural wrinkles and best cared for with gentle handling.

Typical composition for this style (example): many lightweight kimonos use blends such as 95% viscose / 5% elastane or 70% rayon / 30% polyester. Always check the product tag or description for the exact fiber content.

About the model

Reference sizing makes it easier to choose the right fit.

  • Model (example): Height 5'9" (175 cm), Bust 33" (84 cm), Waist 25" (64 cm), Hips 36" (91 cm).
  • Wearing: Size S for a relaxed, true-to-intended-drape fit.
  • Fit note: The model’s measurements are shown for reference. If you prefer a closer fit at the shoulders or bust, consider sizing down; if you like an extra roomy, oversized look, size up.

Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)

  • Read the label first: Always follow the garment's care label — fiber blends sometimes require specific handling.
  • Wash: Cold water is safest. Hand wash or machine wash on a gentle/delicate cycle inside out. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach.
  • Dry: Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry to preserve drape and prevent stretching. If you must tumble dry, use the lowest heat and remove promptly — but line or flat-dry is preferred.
  • Iron / Steam: Use a low-temperature iron setting and press inside out or use steam to remove wrinkles. For viscose/rayon blends, iron while slightly damp or steam to avoid shine or damage.
  • Storage: Fold lightweight knits to avoid hanger shoulder distortion. If hanging, use a wide or padded hanger and avoid overstretching at the shoulders.
  • Delicate details & prints: Turn printed or embellished pieces inside out before washing. Spot-clean stains promptly with a gentle approach.
  • Pilling: Remove pills gently with a fabric shaver or comb; wash inside out to reduce friction.
  • Away from heat & harsh chemicals: Avoid hot water, high dryer heat and chlorine bleach to maintain fiber integrity and color.

Style Tips

  • Casual day: Wear it over a cotton tee and high-waisted jeans with sneakers for an easy, layered look.
  • Work-ready: Layer over a slim blouse or lightweight turtleneck with tailored trousers and loafers. Choose a single-color kimono for a cleaner, office-appropriate silhouette.
  • Weekend & travel: The kimono is an ideal travel layer—pack it over a tank and leggings for instant polish and comfort on the go.
  • Dress it up: Belt at the waist over a slip dress or fitted knit dress and add heeled sandals for an evening-friendly outfit.
  • Proportions: Because kimonos are voluminous, balance them with slimmer bottoms—skinny jeans, straight trousers, or a pencil skirt—unless you’re going for a full relaxed/oversized look.
  • Accessories: Long necklaces or a pendant play well with the long vertical lines of a kimono; a structured bag adds contrast to the fluid shape.
  • Seasonal ideas: Summer: over a cami or swimsuit. Spring/Fall: layered over long-sleeve tees. Winter: wear under a coat or over a lightweight sweater for added warmth and style.
  • Patterns & colors: For printed kimonos, keep the rest of the outfit neutral to let the pattern shine; for solid colors, use textured or patterned accessories to add interest.
