How to measure
Use a flexible cloth tape measure. Measure either your body or a similar shirt that fits the way you like. For garment measurements, lay the shirt flat on a smooth surface, smooth out wrinkles and seams, and measure as described below. Record measurements in inches (in) and centimeters (cm). Conversion: 1 in = 2.54 cm.
- Chest (garment) — With the shirt buttoned and laid flat, measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Multiply that number by 2 for the full chest circumference. Example: 28 in flat = 56 in (142 cm) full chest.
- Neck — For the body: wrap the tape around the base of the neck where a collar would sit; allow one finger between tape and neck for comfort. For the garment: measure the inside collar circumference or measure collar flat seam-to-seam and double.
- Shoulder (seam-to-seam) — Measure across the back from the point of one shoulder seam to the other, following the shoulder line.
- Sleeve length (short sleeve) — Measure from the shoulder seam down to the sleeve hem. For a body measurement, measure from the shoulder bone to where you want the sleeve to end (mid-bicep is common for short sleeves).
- Center back length — Lay the shirt flat with the back facing up and measure from the base of the collar (center back) straight down to the bottom hem.
- Hem / Bottom width — Measure across the bottom hem left to right while flat; multiply by 2 for full hem circumference.
