How to measure

Use a soft measuring tape, wear a thin layer, stand relaxed and breathe normally. If possible have someone help you for the most accurate results. If you don't have a tape, use a piece of string and measure the string against a ruler.

Measure your body (to choose the right size)

  1. Chest — Measure around the fullest part of your chest/bust, under the arms and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. This is the most important measurement for a draped cape.
  2. Center back length — Measure from the base of your neck (the C7 vertebra — the prominent bone at the top of your spine) straight down to where you want the cape to hit (shorter front point and longest back point for asymmetrical hems).
  3. Shoulder width / across back — Measure straight across the back from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other (where a sleeve seam would sit). For capes, measure the widest point across the upper back.
  4. Arm opening (if applicable) — Measure around the upper arm where the arm will pass through or where the cape will sit. Allow an extra 5–10 cm (2–4 in) if you plan to wear thick layers underneath.
  5. Hem width / coverage — If you want to know how much of your lower body the cape will cover, measure the circumference around the hips/thighs at the point you want covered. For garment-to-garment checks, see the “Measure an existing cape” steps below.
  6. Neck opening — Measure around the base of your neck if the cape has a close neckline or buttoned collar.

Measure an existing cape (recommended)

  1. Lay the cape flat on a smooth surface with seams smoothed out.
  2. Chest / body width: Measure straight across the cape at armpit level from one edge to the other, then multiply by 2 to get the circumference.
  3. Lengths: Measure center back from neckline to longest hem point. For an asymmetrical hem, also measure the shortest front/side points and label them.
  4. Shoulder / across back: Measure straight across the top/back where the shoulder would sit.
  5. Use these flat-garment measurements to compare to the product’s size chart or to your body measurements (allow extra room for layering where needed).

Sizing tip: Because this cape is designed to drape, allow 5–10 cm (2–4 in) additional chest room for comfortable layering. Quick conversion: 1 in = 2.54 cm.

Materials (typical for this style)

Exact composition can vary by production run—always check the sewn-in label for the definitive fabric content. Below are common materials used for a draped, asymmetrical-hem cape with pocket patches and what to expect from each.

Main body
  • Polyester or polyester blend — Smooth finish, good drape, wrinkle resistant, easy care (machine wash cold on gentle). Dries quickly and keeps its shape.
  • Viscose / modal / rayon blends — Very soft with fluid drape and a more matte, natural hand. Can wrinkle and may require gentle wash or steaming; shrinkage possible if washed hot.
  • Wool or wool-blend — Warmer and structured; often used for fall/winter capes. Usually requires dry clean or gentle hand wash and flat drying to avoid felting or shrinkage.
Pocket patches & trims
  • Cotton twill / canvas — Durable, slightly textured contrast patch. Machine washable with the garment but spot-test if patches are heavier or dyed differently.
  • Faux leather / PU trim — Adds structure and contrast; clean with a damp cloth and avoid high heat or harsh solvents.
Lining (if present)
Usually 100% polyester or acetate lining for smooth layering. Follow care instructions for the outer fabric; linings help garments slip on cleanly and reduce cling.
Hardware
Buttons, snaps or zippers may be metal or plastic. Close fastenings before washing and avoid bleaching agents which can discolor trims.

Note: If the product page lists a specific fabric (for example “100% polyester” or “wool blend”), follow the care instructions for that exact material.

Model & fit information

The design of a draped asymmetrical cape is intended to be roomy and relaxed. Below are typical model references used to illustrate fit—use them as a guideline for how the cape will sit on different body types.

  • Model A (standard): Height 6'1" (185 cm), Chest 38" (97 cm), Wearing size M — shows a relaxed, mid‑thigh length drape with moderate volume.
  • Model B (plus-size): Height 6'0" (183 cm), Chest 46" (117 cm), Wearing size 2XL — shows the cape’s full-volume plus-size silhouette with room for sweaters underneath.

Fit notes: The cape is cut for an open, draped silhouette rather than a fitted shape. If you prefer a more tailored look, choose the smaller size that still allows comfortable movement; for layering or a more oversized aesthetic, choose the larger size.

Care guide — to keep it lovely longer

Always check the garment's sewn-in care label first. The instructions below cover common fabrics used for this type of cape.

  • Spot clean immediately: Blot spills with a clean cloth (don't rub). Use a mild detergent solution for most stains; test on an inside seam first.
  • Machine wash (polyester / polyester blends): Turn garment inside out, close fasteners, use a laundry bag for delicate patches, wash cold on gentle cycle with similar colors. Remove promptly to reduce wrinkles.
  • Hand wash (viscose / delicate blends): Use cold water and mild detergent, gently swirl, rinse thoroughly. Do not wring—press water out gently and reshape flat to dry.
  • Wool / wool-blend: Prefer dry clean. If hand washing, use a wool detergent, cold water, gentle handling and dry flat to retain shape.
  • Drying: For most draped fabrics, reshape while damp and lay flat or hang on a wide hanger. Avoid high heat tumble drying unless the care label allows it.
  • Ironing / steaming: Use a low to medium iron setting and press with a cloth between iron and fabric. A hand steamer is often the best way to remove wrinkles without flattening the drape.
  • Patches and faux leather trims: Wipe with a damp cloth for light dirt. Avoid soaking or exposing faux leather to high heat.
  • Storage: Hang on a wide-shouldered hanger to preserve shape. Store in a breathable garment bag; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Use cedar or natural sachets to deter moths (for wool items).
  • General prevention: Avoid rough surfaces and heavy backpacks that can rub or distort the fabric and patches.

Style tips

  • Balance the volume: Since the cape adds upper-body volume, pair it with slim or straight-leg trousers or jeans to create balanced proportions.
  • Layering: Wear over a fitted turtleneck or a lightweight blazer for a smart-casual look; add a medium-weight knit underneath for colder days.
  • Belt for shape: Add a belt at the waist over the cape to create a defined silhouette and to show off your waistline while keeping the dramatic hem.
  • Shoe pairings: Boots (Chelsea, combat or dress boots) for a rugged/urban look; loafers or derby shoes for smart casual; clean sneakers for a contemporary street style.
  • Accessories: Use a long scarf, brooch at the shoulder, or a structured hat to add personality without competing with the cape’s lines.
  • Color pairing: Neutral capes (black, navy, grey) work with almost any outfit; richer colors (olive, burgundy, camel) pair well with denim, black or tan pieces.
  • Practical tip: Avoid heavy backpacks—use crossbody bags or briefcases to keep the cape's shoulders and drape intact.

Because the cape is asymmetrical and draped, experiment with how you place the longest point (front, side or back) to change the overall silhouette and visual interest.
