Men's Cable-Knit Zip-Up Cardigan
How to measure
Use these steps to measure either the garment laid flat or your body so you can pick the best size.
Measure the garment (recommended)
- Lay the cardigan flat on a smooth surface with seams aligned and the zipper closed.
- Chest (pit-to-pit): measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. To get circumference, multiply by 2.
- Body length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder (next to the collar) straight down to the hem.
- Sleeve length (center-back method): measure from the center back of the neck across the shoulder to the end of the cuff; alternatively measure from the shoulder seam to the cuff.
- Shoulder width: measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, straight across the back.
- Hem width and cuff width: measure flat across hem or cuff; multiply by 2 for circumference where relevant.
- Tip: measure a cardigan you already own that fits the way you like and compare those numbers to the product measurements.
Measure your body
- Chest: wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
- Sleeve length: with your arm relaxed at your side, measure from the center back of the neck to the wrist.
- Use your body measurements to compare against garment measurements (garment chest should be slightly larger than body chest for comfortable layering).
Example (approximate reference for a Medium)
| Measurement | How measured (flat) | Approx. example (Size M) |
|---|---|---|
| Chest (circumference) | Pit-to-pit × 2 | 40 in / 102 cm |
| Body length | High point shoulder to hem | 27 in / 69 cm |
| Sleeve length | Center back neck to cuff | 25 in / 64 cm |
| Shoulder width | Seam-to-seam across back | 17 in / 43 cm |
Actual measurements vary by style and brand—use the garment or product-specific size chart when available.
Materials
Cable-knit zip-up cardigans are made from a range of yarns. Typical materials and what to expect from each:
- 100% Cotton — breathable, soft, cool-to-the-touch; good for spring and mild climates; easy to machine wash on gentle cycles.
- Merino Wool — warm, breathable, naturally odor-resistant and good at regulating temperature; usually needs gentle washing or dry cleaning.
- Wool Blends (wool + cotton or synthetic) — balanced warmth and durability with easier care than pure wool.
- Cashmere or Cashmere Blends — very soft and luxurious; lightweight warmth but requires delicate care (hand wash or dry clean recommended).
- Acrylic / Synthetic Blends — durable, inexpensive, easier to machine wash; can retain shape but may be less breathable than natural fibers.
- Zipper & Trims — usually metal or coated metal zippers or nylon coil zippers with polyester tape; check product details for hardware finish.
Note: Always check the garment label or product spec for the exact fiber content and country of origin before purchasing or laundering.
Model
Reference details commonly used in product images:
- Model height: 6'1" / 185 cm
- Model chest: 39" / 99 cm
- Wearing size in photos: Medium
- Fit shown: Regular / classic fit — roomy enough for a light layer underneath. For a slimmer look, choose one size down; for more layering room, choose one size up.
Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)
Follow these general care steps to preserve shape, texture and color. Always follow the garment's care label first.
- Turn the cardigan inside out and zip it up before washing to protect the knit and hardware.
- For cotton and most synthetic blends: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors; use a mild detergent.
- For wool, merino, or cashmere: hand wash in cold water with a wool-safe detergent or take it to a professional cleaner. If machine washing, use a wool/silk cycle and garment bag.
- Never use bleach. Avoid fabric softener on wool/cashmere (it can reduce natural fiber performance).
- Do not wring. Gently press out excess water and roll in a towel to remove moisture.
- Lay flat to dry on a clean towel or drying rack, reshaping the cardigan to its original dimensions. Avoid hanging knits while wet — this stretches shoulders.
- Ironing: steam lightly or iron on low heat with a cloth between iron and knit. Most knits respond best to steaming rather than direct ironing.
- Storage: fold and store in a drawer or on a shelf. Use breathable storage and avoid prolonged hanging to prevent shoulder distortion.
- Pilling: remove pills gently with a fabric shaver or pill comb; treat small snags by tucking the yarn back in with a needle or crochet hook.
- Zipper care: zip fully before washing; if the zipper sticks, gently clean teeth and lubricate with a small amount of beeswax or a zipper lubricant.
Style Tips
Ways to wear a cable-knit zip-up cardigan across occasions:
- Casual weekend: Zip over a plain tee or henley, pair with dark jeans and white sneakers for an easy, relaxed look.
- Smart-casual: Layer over a button-down shirt (tucked or untucked) with chinos and desert boots or loafers; leave zipper half-open to show the shirt collar.
- Office layering: Wear zipped over a lightweight merino or cotton polo under a blazer, or use the cardigan as a mid-layer beneath a tailored coat on colder days.
- Texture and color pairing: Use the cable texture to add interest—pair neutral cardigans (navy, grey, cream) with patterned shirts or rich-tone trousers (olive, burgundy, camel).
- Seasonal tips: Lightweight cotton knits work well in spring and fall; heavier wool or wool blends serve well as outer layers in winter.
- Accessories: Add a knitted scarf, a leather belt, or a casual watch to finish the look. For a rugged edge, pair with a field jacket or chore coat.
Choose a fit based on how you plan to layer: slim fit for single-layer styling, regular/relaxed fit for layering over shirts or light sweaters.
