High Waist Pants

How to measure

Use these steps to measure your body and a finished garment so you can pick the best size and fit.

Measuring your body (what you need)

  1. Wear the underwear and shoes you plan to wear with the pants. Stand relaxed with feet together.
  2. Waist: measure around the narrowest part of your torso (natural waist). For high-waist fit, measure at the point where you want the waistband to sit (usually 2–4 in / 5–10 cm above the natural waist).
  3. Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
  4. Inseam: measure from the crotch point (where the seams meet) down the inside leg to the desired hem (where you want the trousers to end).
  5. Thigh: measure around the fullest part of the upper thigh, just below the crotch.
  6. Front rise: measure from the crotch seam up to the top of the front waistband (this helps predict where the pants will sit on your body).
  7. Record measurements in cm and inches (1 in = 2.54 cm).

Measuring a garment (laid flat)

To compare with the product’s garment measurements, measure the actual pants laid flat on a hard surface:

  1. Lay the pants flat and smooth out wrinkles without stretching the fabric.
  2. Waist (laid flat): measure straight across the top of the waistband from left to right and multiply by 2 to get the waist circumference.
  3. Hips (laid flat): measure across the fullest part of the seat (usually 18–20 cm / 7–8 in down from the crotch seam) and multiply by 2.
  4. Inseam: measure from the crotch seam along the inseam to the hem.
  5. Front rise: measure from the crotch seam up to the top of the front waistband.
  6. Thigh: measure across the thigh 2–3 cm down from the crotch seam and multiply by 2.
  7. Hem/leg opening: measure across the bottom hem and multiply by 2.

Convert & choose the right size

  • Garment circumference = (laid-flat measurement) × 2.
  • Allow for ease: difference between your body measurement and the garment measurement.
    • Fitted / slim look: approx. 0–4 cm (0–1.5 in) ease at waist/hips.
    • Regular / comfortable: approx. 4–8 cm (1.5–3 in) ease.
    • Relaxed / oversized: 8+ cm (3+ in) ease.
  • If fabric contains elastane (stretch), you can choose a closer fit; if fabric is non-stretch, choose a size with more ease or size up.
  • If between sizes: for a more tailored look choose the smaller size (only if fabric has good stretch); for comfort or layering, choose the larger size.

Materials & what they mean

High-waist pants are made in several common fabrics. Check the garment label for the exact composition; below are typical options and their characteristics.

  • Cotton stretch twill (example: 98% cotton / 2% elastane) — breathable, soft, comfortable, moderate recovery; holds shape better with a small amount of stretch. Good for everyday and casual styles.
  • Stretch denim (example: 99% cotton / 1% elastane) — sturdy and structured, becomes softer with wear, classic for high-waist jeans.
  • Ponte or double-knit (blend of rayon/polyester/spandex) — smooth, structured drape with excellent recovery; ideal for dressier tailored trousers that keep their shape.
  • Polyester crepe (100% polyester or polyester blend) — lightweight, fluid drape and wrinkle-resistant; often used for wide-leg or tapered trousers with a dressy finish.
  • Linen or linen-blend (linen + cotton or viscose) — very breathable and cool but prone to natural wrinkling; ideal for casual summer trousers.
  • Wool or wool-blend (for suiting trousers) — warm with excellent drape; may require dry-cleaning depending on the blend.

How the material affects fit:

  • Higher elastane content = more stretch and closer fit.
  • Woven non-stretch fabrics need more ease — choose a size with a larger garment measurement for comfort.
  • Heavier fabrics hang straighter and can look more structured; lightweight fabrics will drape and flow.

Care guide (to keep it lovely longer)

Always follow the garment care label first. Below are general care principles tailored to common pant fabrics.

  • Wash: turn pants inside out and wash on a gentle cycle in cold or lukewarm water (≤30°C/86°F) with similar colors. Use a mild detergent.
  • Stretch fabrics: avoid fabric softener (it can break down elastane) and use a gentle cycle or hand wash when possible.
  • Dry: hang to dry or lay flat to retain shape. Avoid high heat in a tumble dryer — use low heat only if the label allows.
  • Iron: iron inside out on the recommended heat setting. Use steam for creases. For elastane blends, use a low temperature to avoid damaging stretch fibers.
  • Dry clean: for wool, tailored suiting, or if the label indicates, use professional dry cleaning.
  • Storage: hang structured trousers on wide hangers or fold lightweight pants neatly. Avoid overcrowding to prevent creases.
  • Quick tips: treat stains promptly, avoid excessive washing (air out between wears), and use a steamer to refresh creases and remove odors.

Style tips

Everyday casual

  • Tuck a fitted tee or lightweight sweater into the waistband to emphasize the high rise. Finish with sneakers or loafers.
  • For a relaxed look, pair with a cropped sweatshirt or an oversized shirt half-tucked at the front.

Office & smart

  • Pair with a tucked blouse and a tailored blazer for a polished, elongated silhouette. Neutral pumps or block heels complete the outfit.
  • Choose a slim-fit or tapered leg in ponte or suiting fabric for a smarter look.

Evening & elevated

  • Wear with a silk cami or fitted bodysuit and statement jewelry. Pointed-toe heels or heeled mules will lengthen the leg line.
  • Add a belt to draw attention to the waist and create a defined hourglass shape.

Shoes & accessories

  • Heels and wedges elongate; ankle boots add edge; loafers or chunky sneakers keep it casual.
  • Belts help define the waist — choose narrow for a delicate look or wide for a bolder statement.

Styling by body shape

  • Pear-shaped: opt for a slightly wider leg or straight cut to balance hips; tuck tops to show the waist.
  • Hourglass: highlight your waist with fitted tops and a belt; most leg shapes will work well.
  • Apple-shaped: choose mid-to-wide leg silhouettes with a structured top layer to balance proportions.
  • Petite: choose cropped or ankle-length hems and heels to visually lengthen the legs; avoid too much excess fabric.
  • Tall: embrace long, full-length hems and wide-leg styles for dramatic silhouettes.

Tip: High-waist pants are a great canvas — play with proportions (cropped tops, long jackets) and textures (knit, leather, satin) to create different looks from the same pair.
