Elastic Waist Wide Leg Pants — Fit, Materials & Care
How to measure
We recommend measuring a similar pair of pants that fits you well, or measuring the garment itself laid flat. Use a flexible tape and record measurements in inches or centimetres. For elastic waistbands, note both the relaxed and fully stretched measurements.
Measuring the garment (recommended)
- Lay flat: Smooth the pants on a flat surface, fastening any buttons and zippers but do not stretch the elastic unless instructed.
- Waist (flat): Measure straight across the top of the waistband from left to right. For circumference, multiply the flat measurement by 2. For elastic waists, measure relaxed (unstretched) and fully stretched and record both.
- Hips: Measure across the widest part of the seat/hip area (usually about 7–9 cm / 3–3.5" down from the crotch seam). Multiply by 2 for full hip circumference.
- Front rise: From the crotch seam up to the top of the front waistband.
- Back rise: From the crotch seam up to the top of the back waistband.
- Inseam: From the crotch seam down the inside leg to the hem.
- Outseam: From the top of the waistband along the side seam to the hem.
- Thigh: Measure across the leg 5 cm (approx. 2") below the crotch seam, then multiply by 2 for full thigh circumference.
- Hem / Leg opening: Measure across the bottom hem to get the width of the leg opening; multiply by 2 for circumference.
Measuring your body
- Waist: Measure your natural waist (the narrowest part), or the position where you plan to wear the pants (high or low). Keep tape comfortably snug, not tight.
- Hips: Measure the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- Inseam: Measure from crotch to desired hem length (stand with shoes you plan to wear to get accurate length).
- Choosing size: Compare your body measurements to the garment measurements (remember garment circumference = flat × 2). For a relaxed wide-leg fit allow 1–3" (2.5–8 cm) of ease at the hips. If your waist sits between the garment's relaxed and stretched elastic circumference, it will fit comfortably. If you're between sizes and prefer more room, size up.
Materials
The exact fabric composition appears on the product label. Below are common materials used for elastic-waist wide leg pants and what to expect from each.
- Cotton / Cotton blends — Breathable and durable with a soft hand. May wrinkle depending on weave. Care: machine wash cold on gentle, tumble low or line dry; iron medium if needed.
- Linen / Linen blends — Lightweight and cool with a textured, airy drape; naturally wrinkles. Care: machine wash gentle or hand wash cold, line dry or lay flat, iron while damp for a smooth finish.
- Viscose / Rayon — Fluid, silky drape but can be prone to shrinking when wet. Care: hand wash or machine wash cold on gentle; reshape and dry flat or line dry; some styles may be dry-clean only.
- Tencel / Lyocell — Soft, drapey and more eco-friendly; good moisture management. Care: machine wash cold gentle, hang or lay flat to dry, low-heat iron or steam.
- Polyester / Synthetic blends — Wrinkle-resistant and durable, often blended for easy-care. Care: machine wash cold, tumble low or line dry, low iron/steam as needed.
- Elastane / Spandex (2–5%) — Provides stretch and recovery. Care: avoid high-heat drying or ironing; do not use fabric softener on elastic components to preserve elasticity.
- Wool & Wool blends — Used in tailored or colder-weather wide legs; warm and structured. Care: often dry-clean recommended or gentle wool wash; reshape and dry flat.
- Trims & hardware — Drawcords, elastic casings, buttons and zippers may be made from cotton/polyester/metal/resin—follow the garment care label for any special instructions.
Tip: If sustainability is important, look for Tencel/Lyocell, organic cotton, or certified fabrics (GOTS, OEKO‑TEX) noted on the product page or label.
About the model
Model for fit reference: 5'9" (175 cm). Measurements: Bust 32" (81 cm) · Waist 24" (61 cm) · Hips 35" (89 cm). The model is wearing size S for a relaxed wide-leg silhouette.
Use the garment measurements and the guidance above to choose the best size for your preferred fit. If you prefer a roomier fit at the hip or leg, consider sizing up.
Care guide (to keep it lovely longer)
- Before washing: Empty pockets, fasten zippers, tie or remove drawstrings if possible, and turn pants inside out to protect color and trims.
- Machine wash: Cold or warm water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent; wash like colors together. Avoid chlorine bleach unless the care label allows it.
- Hand wash: Use cool water and a gentle detergent. Do not wring; press water out gently and reshape while damp.
- Drying: Line dry or lay flat to preserve shape and elasticity. Tumble dry low only if the care label explicitly permits—remove promptly to reduce wrinkling.
- Ironing & steaming: Use the iron temperature appropriate for the fabric (low for synthetics, medium for cotton, high with steam for linen). Steam is ideal for viscose/Tencel to refresh and relax fibers.
- Elastic care: Avoid high heat in dryers and irons; heat shortens elastic lifespan. Avoid fabric softeners on elastic parts.
- Stain removal: Treat stains promptly—blot (don’t rub), apply a mild stain remover and test on an inside seam first.
- Storage: Fold or hang by the waistband in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and distortion.
- Quick refresh: Air the pants outside in shade or use a steamer to remove odors and wrinkles between washes.
Style tips
Elastic waist wide leg pants are a versatile wardrobe staple. Here are easy ways to style them for different occasions:
- Casual everyday: Tuck in a fitted tee or wear a cropped sweatshirt with white sneakers for an easy, balanced look.
- Smart-casual / Office: Tuck in a blouse, add a slim belt and a tailored blazer. Finish with loafers or low block heels.
- Evening: Pair with a silk cami or fitted bodysuit, strappy heels and minimal jewelry for a polished silhouette.
- Layering: For cooler seasons, wear a fitted turtleneck and a long coat—keep the top streamlined to balance the wide leg.
- Proportion tips: Because the legs are voluminous, choose a fitted or cropped top to define the waist; belting the elastic waist gives instant structure.
- Shoes: Heels or wedges elongate the legs; mules, sandals and sneakers work well for casual styling; ankle boots pair nicely when the hem hits just above the boot.
- For petite frames: Opt for a high waist and cropped length or wear heels to avoid swallowing your frame.
- For tall frames: Full-length hems and bold patterns look terrific—try longer, flowing silks or linens.
- Outfit formulas:
- Weekend: white tee + linen wide-leg + white sneakers + crossbody bag.
- Work: tucked blouse + navy blazer + pointed loafers.
- Night out: satin cami + cropped blazer + heeled sandals.
Alteration tip: A simple hem adjustment or small waist take-in can make a big difference for a perfect, tailored fit.
