How to measure

Use these steps to measure your body or an existing pair of pants so you can pick the best size and fit.

Measuring your body (wearing light clothing)

• Waist: Find your natural waist (the narrowest point) or where you plan to wear these pants. Wrap the tape measure around that point, keep it parallel to the floor and breathe normally.
• Hips: With feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
• Inseam: Measure from the crotch (where seams meet) down the inside of the leg to where you want the hem to sit.
• Front rise: Measure from the crotch seam up to the top of the front waistband — this shows where the pants will sit on the body.
• Thigh: Measure around the fullest part of the thigh (about 1–2 in / 2–5 cm below the crotch).
• Leg opening / Hem: Measure around the ankle area where the pants finish, or measure across the hem of a favorite pair and double that width.

Measuring a pair of pants (laid flat)

• Waist (flat): Lay pants flat and smooth. Measure from side to side at the top of the waistband; double that number for waist circumference. For elastic/drawstring waistbands, also gently stretch and measure maximum width.
• Hips (flat): Measure 7–9 in (18–23 cm) down from the top and across the fullest part of the seat; double for circumference.
• Inseam (flat): Measure from the crotch seam down to the hem along the inside leg.
• Front rise (flat): Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the front waistband (no doubling).
• Thigh (flat): Measure across the thigh about 1 in (2–3 cm) below the crotch seam and double for circumference.
• Leg opening (flat): Measure the hem width flat and double for circumference.

Fit tip: for a relaxed fit add about 2–4 in (5–10 cm) of ease at the hip; for a closer fit add 0–2 in (0–5 cm). If between sizes, the drawstring waist makes sizing up a comfortable option.

Materials

Drawstring pants are made in a variety of fabrics. Below are common materials and what to expect from each.

100% Cotton

Breathable and durable with a soft hand that improves over time. Prone to slight shrinkage and moderate wrinkling; easy machine care (cold/warm wash).

Linen or Linen Blends

Lightweight, very breathable and ideal for warm weather. Natural crisp texture and visible wrinkles—gentle wash and line dry recommended.

Viscose / Rayon / Modal / Tencel (Lyocell)

Excellent drape and soft, smooth feel. Breathable and elegant-looking; treat gently (cold wash, hang to dry or low heat) to avoid shrinkage and distortion.

Polyester or Polyester Blends

Wrinkle-resistant and low-maintenance. Less breathable than natural fibers but durable and easy to care for.

Blends with Elastane / Spandex (1–5%)

Add stretch and recovery for comfort and shape retention. Wash cold and avoid high-heat drying to protect elasticity.

Knit jersey or Interlock

Soft, stretchy and casual — comfortable for everyday wear. Handle gently to avoid pilling and excessive stretching.

Notes: Pocket bags are often lightweight cotton or polyester; drawstrings can be cotton cord, braided cord, twill tape or elastic-cored. Always check the garment label or product details online for the exact fiber content.

Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)

• Always check the care label first. Follow specific instructions for the fabric blend.
• Prep before wash: Empty pockets, close zippers, and tie or tuck drawstrings to prevent tangling.
• Wash: Machine wash cold or at 30°C on a gentle cycle with like colors. Use a mild detergent; avoid bleach.
• Delicates: For viscose, linen and lightweight fabrics use a mesh bag or hand wash to reduce abrasion.
• Dry: Air dry flat or hang to dry. If the label allows, tumble dry on low — avoid high heat which can shrink or damage elastic/drawstrings.
• Ironing & steaming: Iron inside out at the appropriate temperature for the fiber. Use steam or a wrinkle-release spray for quick refreshes.
• Storage: Fold or hang on wide hangers; avoid prolonged sun exposure that can fade colors.
• Quick repairs: Mend small holes and reinforce pocket seams early to extend wear life.
• Reduce washing: Spot-clean and air garments between wears to preserve color and fabric integrity.
