Open Front Long Sleeve Cardigan
How to measure
To find the best fit, measure either your body or a similar cardigan you already own. Use a flexible tape measure and keep the tape parallel to the floor.
Measure your body (for choosing a size)
- Bust / Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape comfortably snug but not tight.
- Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist (natural waistline) with the body relaxed.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, with feet together.
- Arm length: From the shoulder point (where a sleeve sits) down to the wrist, with a slight bend in the elbow.
- Shoulder width: Measure across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam (or between the bony points of the shoulders).
Measure a cardigan you own (recommended)
Lay the cardigan flat on a smooth surface and smooth out wrinkles (do not stretch).
- Chest (pit to pit): Measure across from one armpit seam to the other, then multiply by 2 to get the full circumference.
- Sleeve length: From the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
- Shoulder width: Measure across the back between the shoulder seams.
- Length: From the top of the shoulder (or center back at the base of the neck) down to the hem.
- Hem width: Measure the bottom edge from side to side and multiply by 2 for circumference.
Conversion: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. If you are between sizes and want a relaxed/open-front look, consider sizing up; for a closer fit, choose your usual size.
Materials
Composition can vary by color and season. Always check the sewn-in label for the exact fiber content. Below are common fibers used in cardigans and what to expect from each.
- Cotton — Breathable, soft and comfortable for everyday wear. May shrink slightly; best washed cold and laid flat to dry.
- Wool (Merino / Lambswool) — Warm and insulating with natural elasticity. Can felt or shrink if agitated in hot water; hand wash cold with wool detergent or dry clean, and dry flat.
- Cashmere — Exceptionally soft and lightweight; delicate care recommended (hand wash cold or dry clean) and always dry flat.
- Acrylic — Lightweight, colorfast and easy-care. Resistant to wrinkles but may pill over time. Machine wash gentle; low heat drying or dry flat.
- Viscose / Modal / Rayon — Drapey, smooth and breathable but can be delicate when wet. Hand wash cold or machine-gentle in a laundry bag; dry flat.
- Polyester / Nylon — Durable and shape-retaining; often blended to improve strength and reduce shrinkage.
- Elastane / Spandex — Added in small amounts for stretch and recovery.
Example label you might see: “50% Acrylic, 30% Cotton, 20% Nylon.” Always follow the exact fabric label for care and composition details.

Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)
Follow these simple steps to maintain softness, shape and color:
- Check the care label first. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the sewn label.
- Washing: Hand wash cold for delicate fibers (wool, cashmere, viscose). For cotton and durable blends, use a gentle machine cycle in cold water inside a mesh laundry bag.
- Detergent: Use a mild detergent or a wool-specific formula for natural fibers. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners whenever possible.
- Drying: Gently press out excess water—do not wring. Reshape and lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight or heat. Avoid hanging heavy knits to prevent stretching.
- Pilling: Remove pills carefully with a fabric shaver or sweater comb. Pilling is normal on many blends and does not affect fabric performance.
- Storage: Fold cardigans and store flat in a drawer or on a shelf. Use breathable storage and natural moth repellents (cedar blocks) when storing wool or cashmere long-term.
- Ironing & steaming: Use low heat with a pressing cloth for ironing or a handheld steamer to remove wrinkles. Avoid high heat on synthetics.
- Stain & spot care: Blot spills immediately. Treat stains promptly according to fiber type; for tough or unknown stains, seek professional cleaning.
- Professional care: For delicate fibers or if unsure, dry cleaning is a safe option.
Pro tip: Turn the cardigan inside out before washing to reduce abrasion and preserve the surface appearance.
Style Tips
- Everyday casual: Layer over a tee or tank with jeans and sneakers for an effortless look.
- Office ready: Wear over a blouse with tailored trousers or a pencil skirt and loafers for a polished, comfortable outfit.
- Belt it: Add a slim belt at the waist to create shape over dresses or high-waisted pants.
- Balance proportions: Pair an oversized cardigan with slimmer bottoms (skinny jeans, slim trousers) to keep the silhouette balanced.
- Layering: Use as a mid-layer under a coat in colder months or over a thin turtleneck for extra warmth.
- Color pairing: Neutral colors are versatile and pair easily with prints and bright hues. For a statement cardigan, keep the base layers neutral.
- Accessories: Add scarves, brooches or long necklaces to personalize and elevate the look.
Size tip: If you plan to layer bulky items underneath, consider sizing up. For a streamlined fit, choose your usual size or pick a fabric with stretch.
