Moissanite Rhodium-Plated Necklace
How to Measure
Use the steps below to get accurate sizing for both the necklace and how it will sit on you.
- Chain length on you
- Wrap a soft tape (or a piece of string you can later measure) around your neck where the chain will sit.
- Add 2 in (5 cm) for a collarbone fit, or add 4 in (10 cm) to sit just below the collarbone.
- Common lengths and where they sit on most necks:
- 14 in: choker
- 16 in: rests at the collarbone
- 18 in: just below the collarbone
- 20–22 in: upper chest
- Pendant size (if applicable)
- Measure height (top of bail to bottom of pendant) and width at the widest point with a ruler.
- If you only have the stone size in millimeters, see the moissanite size guide below for visual context.
- Chain thickness
- Measure the diameter of the chain with calipers or compare to a millimeter ruler. Most everyday chains are about 0.8–1.2 mm.
- Moissanite size guide (mm ≈ diamond carat equivalent)
- 4.0 mm ≈ 0.25 ct
- 5.0 mm ≈ 0.50 ct
- 6.0 mm ≈ 0.80 ct
- 6.5 mm ≈ 1.00 ct
- 7.5 mm ≈ 1.50 ct
- 8.0 mm ≈ 2.00 ct
Note: Moissanite is weighed differently from diamond; “carat equivalent” describes the visual size.
Materials
- Gemstone: Moissanite
- Lab-grown silicon carbide known for exceptional brilliance and fire.
- Durability: 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale (excellent for everyday wear).
- High refractive index (approx. 2.65–2.69) for intense sparkle; ethically produced.
- Metal: Rhodium-plated finish
- Rhodium is a platinum-group metal prized for a bright, mirror-like white finish.
- Helps resist tarnish and enhances scratch resistance compared with unplated silver.
- Typically applied over a precious-metal base (commonly sterling silver or gold). Exact base metal may vary by style.
Model & Fit Guide
Use these on-body references to visualize where the necklace sits on most people. For a personalized fit, measure your neck as described above.
- Choker look: choose a length close to your exact neck circumference.
- Classic look: neck circumference + 2 in (typically lands at the collarbone).
- Layering base: neck circumference + 4 in (falls just below the collarbone). Add longer chains (20–24 in) beneath for a tiered look.
- Broader frames or higher necklines: consider 20–22 in for comfortable drape.
Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)
- Last on, first off: apply lotions, perfume, and hairspray before putting on the necklace.
- Daily clean: rinse in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap; gently brush behind the stone; rinse and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Deep clean (occasionally): a 1:6 mix of clear household ammonia to water or a jewelry-cleaner labeled safe for moissanite. Avoid abrasive powders and silver dips that may strip plating.
- Avoid: pools, hot tubs, saunas, harsh cleaners, and sweating workouts while wearing—chlorine and acids can shorten plating life.
- Storage: keep in a soft pouch or separate compartment to prevent scratches and reduce exposure to air and moisture.
- Replating: with frequent wear, rhodium may need a refresh over time; most jewelers can re-plate to restore a like-new shine.
Style Tips
- Everyday shine: wear solo on a 16–18 in chain for a crisp, white-metal look that pairs with denim or a blazer.
- Layer it: stack with a 14–16 in choker and a 20–22 in chain for depth; mix textures (snake, box, or paperclip).
- Neckline pairing:
- V-neck: 16–18 in so the pendant floats in the V.
- Scoop or crew: 18–20 in to sit just below the collar.
- Button-down: 16 in peeking between top buttons for a polished finish.
- Match metals: rhodium’s bright white tone complements sterling silver, white gold, and platinum; mix with yellow or rose pieces for a modern two-tone stack.
- Complete the set: pair with moissanite studs or a tennis bracelet for occasion wear.
