How to measure
Use a flexible tape measure and measure over a light layer. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight. Take each measurement twice for accuracy.
Measure your body
- Chest: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest/bust, under the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
- Waist: Measure around the natural waistline at the narrowest point, usually above the belly button.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips/seat with feet together.
- Shoulder width: Measure across the back from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.
- Back length: From the prominent bone at the base of your neck (C7 vertebra) down to where you want the vest to end (typically at or just below the hip).
Measure an existing vest (garment)
Lay the vest flat, zip it up, smooth wrinkles (do not stretch), then measure:
- Pit to pit (chest): Measure across the front about 1" below the armhole, then multiply by 2 to get the chest circumference.
- Hem width: Measure across the bottom edge and multiply by 2.
- Shoulder across back: Measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.
- Length: From the high point of shoulder (where shoulder meets collar) down to the hem.
- Armhole depth: From the top of the shoulder seam down to the bottom of the armhole (or measure the armhole circumference).
Fit tip: Allow about 2–4" of ease (extra room) over your body chest measurement for comfortable layering. For thicker mid-layers, allow 4–6" of ease.
