How to measure — get the right fit
Measure the shirt (garment laid flat)
- Lay the shirt flat: Button up, smooth out wrinkles and lay on a flat surface.
- Chest (pit-to-pit): Measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Double that number to get the full chest circumference (e.g., 24" flat = 48" chest).
- Shoulder width: Measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back.
- Sleeve length: Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff. (If you prefer, measure from the center back of the neck to the cuff for overall sleeve length.)
- Body length: Measure from the highest point of the shoulder (where the collar meets the shoulder) straight down to the bottom hem.
- Hem width: Measure straight across the bottom hem and double the number for circumference.
- Cuff width: Measure across the closed cuff and double to get the circumference.
- Collar / neck band: Measure the inside base of the collar from end to end and double for collar circumference.
Record measurements in inches and centimetres (1 in = 2.54 cm) and compare to the product size chart. If you are between sizes or plan to layer, choose the larger size for extra comfort.
Measure your body (for best fit)
- Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, keeping the tape level.
- Shoulder: Find the bony point at the edge of each shoulder and measure across the back between them.
- Sleeve: With a slightly bent elbow, measure from the shoulder point to the wrist bone.
- Neck: Measure around the base of your neck where a collar would sit.
- Waist & Hips: Measure around your natural waist and the fullest part of your hips; helpful when tucking the shirt in.
Fit guidance: allow ~2" of ease for a fitted look, ~3–4" for a standard/comfortable fit, and 5"+ for an oversized/relaxed fit. Shoulders are the most important — the shoulder seam should land at your shoulder bone.
Materials & construction — what to look for
Check the product label or listing for exact composition. Common fabric types for men's full-size / plus-size long-sleeve button-ups and what they mean:
- 100% Cotton (poplin, broadcloth): Breathable, soft, crisp finish; may shrink slightly if not pre-shrunk.
- Cotton–Polyester blends (e.g., 60/40, 65/35): Better wrinkle resistance, easier care, less shrinkage.
- Oxford cloth / chambray: Textured, durable, casual look that softens with wear.
- Flannel (brushed cotton): Warm, soft, ideal for cooler weather.
- Linen or linen blends: Very breathable and airy — great for warm weather, wrinkles more easily.
- Stretch blends (1–3% elastane): Adds mobility and comfort across the chest and shoulders.
Construction details to note: button material (resin, plastic, or mother-of-pearl), reinforced seams and bartacks at stress points, double-needle topstitching, placket and collar type, and whether there is a chest pocket. Fabric weight (light/medium/heavy) affects drape and seasonality — check product notes for ounces or GSM when available.
Model information (reference)
The photos are provided for fit reference. Example reference measurements (use as a guide):
- Reference model: Height: 6'0" (183 cm) — Chest: 44" (112 cm) — Wearing size: 2XL (plus-size fit shown)
- Fit shown: Relaxed / true-to-size for a full-size cut with room through the chest and torso; sleeves hit at the wrist bone.
If you prefer a closer fit, choose one size smaller; for layering or a more relaxed look, size up. Always compare the garment’s flat measurements to a shirt you already own for best results.
Care guide (to keep it lovely longer)
- Machine wash cold with like colors on a gentle cycle. Turn the shirt inside out to protect buttons and finish.
- Use a mild detergent; avoid chlorine bleach. Use non-chlorine bleach only when needed.
- Tumble dry low or, preferably, hang to dry to reduce wear and shrinkage. Remove promptly from dryer to minimize wrinkles.
- Iron inside out on medium heat (higher heat for 100% cotton if needed). Use steam or a garment steamer for quicker wrinkle removal.
- For linen or delicate finishes, wash on a gentle cycle and hang dry. For flannel, wash cold and tumble low to keep softness.
- Treat stains promptly: blot (don’t rub), pre-treat with a stain remover or mild detergent, then launder.
- Store on a wide hanger to preserve shoulder shape; button the top button or two to maintain collar alignment.
- Avoid over-washing — airing garments between wears and spot-cleaning can prolong life.
Style tips
Casual
- Wear untucked over jeans or chinos; roll the sleeves once or twice for a relaxed feel.
- Pair with sneakers or casual boots and a plain tee underneath for a modern layered look.
Smart casual & office
- Tuck into tailored chinos or trousers, add a leather belt and loafers for a polished appearance.
- Layer under a blazer or sport coat — pick a slimmer outer layer if you want a neater silhouette.
- For ties, choose a medium-width knot and a shirt with a crisp collar.
Seasonal & layering
- Under a sweater: let the shirt tail peek out for contrast; collar worn over the sweater neck looks neat with casual layers.
- Over a tee: leave the shirt unbuttoned for a laid-back look in spring or early fall.
- Flannel and heavier Oxfords are great fall/winter; lightweight poplin and linen blends are ideal for warm months.
Plus-size fit & proportion tips
- Focus on shoulder fit — the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone.
- Opt for vertical details (subtle pinstripes) or darker solids to create a lengthening effect.
- Avoid overly baggy cuts; structured fabrics with a little weight drape better and avoid adding unnecessary bulk.
- Keep shirt length proportional — hem should land near the mid-zipper area of your trousers when tucked or just below the belt when untucked for balanced proportions.
- Use a well-placed belt to define the waist when tucking; adding a lightweight jacket can create clean vertical lines.
Quick tip: compare a favorite shirt laid flat to the garment measurements above before ordering — this is the most reliable way to get the fit you want.
