Men's Button Down Collared Neck Shirt
How to measure
Use a soft tape measure. For best results measure a well-fitting shirt laid flat (garment measurements) and compare to your body measurements. Record both inches and centimetres (1 in = 2.54 cm).
Garment measurements (lay shirt flat)
- Chest (Pit-to-Pit): Button the shirt and lay it flat. Measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other. Double that number for full chest circumference.
- Shoulder: Measure across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam (where the sleeve meets the shoulder).
- Sleeve length: Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff along the top of the sleeve. (Alternative: measure from the center back of the neck to the cuff for a full sleeve length including shoulder.)
- Back length: Measure from the highest point of the shoulder (where the collar meets the shoulder seam) straight down to the bottom hem.
- Neck (Collar): Measure the inside collar circumference. When measuring flat, measure from one inner collar edge to the other and double it.
- Hem / Bottom Width: Measure across the bottom hem and double the number for full circumference.
- Bicep (Upper Arm): Measure across the sleeve about 1" (2–3 cm) below the armhole seam and double it for circumference.
Body measurements (how to measure yourself)
- Chest: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, tape level under the arms and across the shoulder blades.
- Waist: Measure at your natural waist (above hips, below ribcage).
- Sleeve: Measure from the center back of your neck across your shoulder to your wrist with the arm slightly bent for comfort.
- Neck: Measure around the base of your neck where a collar would sit; allow 1–2 cm for comfort if you wear a tie.
Tip: If you are between sizes, choose the larger size for more movement room. Allow 1–2 cm tolerance for manual measuring and potential fabric shrinkage (natural fibres).
Materials
Check the product label for exact composition. Below are common fabrics used for button-down shirts and what to expect from each.
- 100% Cotton (Poplin / Oxford / Twill) — Breathable, soft, and comfortable. Poplin is smooth and lightweight; Oxford has a textured weave and is slightly heavier. Cotton can wrinkle and may shrink slightly if washed hot.
- Cotton Blends (e.g., Cotton/Polyester) — Combine natural feel with wrinkle resistance and improved durability. Easier care (less ironing) and reduced shrinkage.
- Linen — Extremely breathable and ideal for warm weather. Natural textured look with a relaxed drape; wrinkles are part of the linen aesthetic. Can be slightly translucent depending on weight.
- Tencel / Lyocell / Modal — Soft, smooth, and drapey with good moisture-wicking properties. Often blended with cotton for a premium, comfortable feel.
- Flannel — Brushed cotton or wool blend for warmth; soft and cozy for cooler months.
- Polyester / Microfiber — Lightweight, durable, quick-drying and often wrinkle-resistant. May feel less breathable than natural fibers.
Fabric weight and weave affect drape and formality: finer poplin and chambray read more casual to smart-casual, heavier twill and oxford are more structured.

Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)
- Always check the garment care label first — follow any fabric-specific instructions.
- Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle with like colors. Turn the shirt inside out to reduce wear on buttons and prints.
- Use a mild detergent; avoid chlorine bleach. For white shirts, use oxygen-based whiteners if needed.
- Remove promptly from the washer to reduce creasing. For cotton shirts: tumble dry low or hang to dry to minimize shrinkage. For linen or delicate blends: air dry flat or hang to dry.
- Iron while slightly damp for best results. Use medium heat for cotton; low to medium for blends. Iron the collar, cuffs and placket first for a crisp look.
- For shirts marked "Dry Clean Only" or with special finishes, use professional dry cleaning.
- Store on roomy hangers (rounded shoulder) to preserve shape. Button the top button to keep the collar in place.
- Quick stain removal: gently blot (do not rub) and pre-treat with a small amount of detergent or stain remover before washing.
Extra tips:
- Avoid high heat drying to reduce shrinkage and fabric wear.
- Use collar stays (if applicable) or insert small stays to keep the collar crisp.
- Refresh lightly between washes by airing or using a low-heat steamer to remove wrinkles.
Style Tips
- Smart-casual / Office: Tuck into chinos or tailored trousers, add a leather belt and derby shoes. Button-down collars pair neatly with a knit tie or no tie for a modern office look.
- Casual: Wear untucked over dark denim or chinos. Roll the sleeves once or twice for a relaxed vibe; wear with sneakers or loafers.
- Layering: Use under a lightweight knit sweater (V-neck or crew) or blazer for transitional weather. For colder months, wear under a wool coat or quilted jacket.
- Summer: Choose lighter weights (poplin or linen) and pair with tailored shorts and boat shoes or espadrilles.
- Fit advice: The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone. Sleeve length should reach the wrist bone. If between sizes, size up for more comfort or down for a slimmer silhouette.
- Accessories: A simple watch, leather belt, or a knit tie complements the button-down collar. For a preppy look, try wearing with a lightweight sweater draped over the shoulders.
