How to measure
For accurate sizing and to list reliable garment measurements, measure the shirt laid flat on a smooth surface. Use a soft tape measure and record in inches or centimeters (1 in = 2.54 cm). Round to the nearest 0.5 cm / 1/4".
Garment (laid-flat) measurement guide
- Chest (pit-to-pit): Button the shirt and lay it flat. Measure straight across the front from one armpit seam to the other, about 1 cm (1/4") below the armhole. Double this measurement to get full chest circumference.
- Shoulder width: Measure across the back from shoulder seam to shoulder seam at the highest point.
- Sleeve length (shoulder seam to cuff): Measure from the shoulder seam out to the end of the cuff. For center-back sleeve length, measure from the center back of the neck across the shoulder to the end of the cuff (used by some brands).
- Front length: From the highest point of the shoulder (next to the collar seam) straight down to the hem at the front.
- Back length: From center back at the base of the collar straight down to the hem.
- Neck (collar): Measure around the inside of the collar from button to button; for garment collar circumference, measure the full inside circumference or measure flat across collar and double.
- Hem / Bottom width: Measure straight across the bottom hem and double to get the full circumference.
- Waist (if tapered): Measure across the narrowest point of the shirt body and double for circumference.
How to measure your body (choose the right size)
- Chest: Wrap the tape across the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
- Shoulder: Measure from the edge of one shoulder (where the arm meets the shoulder) across to the other.
- Sleeve length: With your arm slightly bent, measure from the center back of your neck across the shoulder to the wrist bone (or measure from shoulder tip to wrist for simpler reference).
- Neck: Wrap tape around the base of your neck where a shirt collar would sit; allow about 1 cm (1/2") for comfort if you plan to wear a tie.
- Torso length: From the high point of shoulder (next to the collar) down to where you want the shirt hem to sit.
Tip: Compare body measurements to the garment (laid-flat doubled) rather than relying solely on labeled size. If you prefer a looser fit or plan to layer, choose the next size up or allow ~2–4 cm / 1–1.5" extra chest room.
Materials
Typical fabrics and components used for a men's button-down collared shirt and what to expect:
- 100% Cotton (Poplin / Broadcloth): Smooth, breathable, crisp finish; good for daily wear and ironing to a sharp look.
- Oxford Cloth: Slightly textured basket weave, durable and casual — often used for button-down collars.
- Linen: Lightweight and highly breathable with natural slubs and relaxed wrinkles; ideal for warm weather.
- Cotton–Polyester Blend: Increased wrinkle-resistance and durability, easier care, slightly less breathable than pure cotton.
- Chambray: Lightweight, denim-like appearance that reads casual but neat.
- Flannel (Brushed Cotton): Soft, warm, and slightly fuzzy surface — great for cold seasons.
- Performance / Technical fabrics: Moisture-wicking, quick-dry, stretch blends with easy-care finishes (avoid fabric softener to preserve performance).
Other details:
- Buttons: Plastic, resin, or mother-of-pearl; mother-of-pearl gives a premium look.
- Collar & Cuff Interlining: Lightweight fusible interlining is common for collar and cuff structure; some shirts use removable collar stays.
- Finishes: Anti-wrinkle, stain-resistant, or enzyme washes may be applied — these impact care instructions and feel.
- Label: Always check the sewn care and composition label for the exact fabric breakdown for this specific shirt.

Care Guide (to keep it lovely longer)
Always follow the garment care label. Below are general care recommendations by fabric type and common best practices.
General rules
- Turn the shirt inside out before washing to reduce friction on buttons and surface finish.
- Use a gentle detergent and avoid bleach unless the label explicitly permits it.
- Wash like colors together. For dark or bright shirts, wash separately the first few times.
- Use a mesh laundry bag for delicate or embellished shirts.
- Remove promptly from the washer to reduce wrinkles.
By fabric
- Cotton / Cotton blends: Machine wash cold or warm on gentle. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron medium heat; steam while slightly damp for best results.
- Linen: Machine wash cold on gentle or hand wash. Hang or lay flat to dry to avoid excessive shrinkage. Iron while damp on medium-high heat for a crisp finish.
- Performance fabrics: Machine wash cold, avoid fabric softeners and bleach, and hang to dry to keep performance finishes intact. Do not iron high heat.
- Flannel: Wash cold with like colors, tumble dry low or hang dry; avoid excessive high heat to preserve softness.
Stain & maintenance tips
- Treat stains promptly with a suitable prewash stain remover. Test on a hidden seam first.
- For oil-based stains, apply a small amount of dish soap before washing.
- Replace loose buttons and re-secure loose threads promptly to avoid more damage.
- Pilling: use a fabric comb or depiller on low-pile fabrics like flannel to refresh the surface.
Storage
- Hang shirts on shaped or wooden hangers to keep shoulders and collars in shape.
- Button the top button to preserve collar shape while stored.
- Avoid long-term storage in plastic — use breathable garment bags for seasonal storage.
Style Tips
Versatile styling ideas to get the most from a button-down collared shirt:
Casual looks
- Untucked with slim jeans or chinos and clean white sneakers for an effortless weekend outfit.
- Use as an overshirt: layer it open over a plain tee for a light, casual jacket alternative.
- Roll sleeves to just below the elbow for a relaxed, put-together vibe.
Smart casual & office
- Tuck into chinos with a leather belt and suede loafers for smart-casual meetings.
- Pair a crisp white or light-blue button-down with a navy blazer and tailored trousers for a classic office look.
- Button-down collars work well without a tie; for a tie look, choose a spread or point collar if you want a fuller knot.
Formal & layered
- For a business look, wear a slim-fit cotton shirt tucked into dress trousers with a matching leather belt and lace-up shoes.
- Layer under a sweater (crew or V-neck): let the collar and cuffs peek out for a refined preppy look.
- In colder months, pair flannel or heavier cotton shirts with corduroy or wool trousers and boots.
Fit & proportion tips
- Shoulder seams should sit at your natural shoulder edge; sleeves should reach the base of the thumb when arms are relaxed.
- Slim fit for a tailored silhouette; regular for everyday comfort; size up if you want extra room for layering.
- Balance patterns: if the shirt has a bold pattern, keep trousers and outer layers neutral; mix small-scale patterns with solids for interest.
Quick outfit ideas:
- White Oxford + navy chinos + brown loafers — timeless and versatile.
- Light chambray + dark jeans + white sneakers — smart-casual weekend.
- Striped shirt + grey suit + leather derby shoes — modern office-ready.
