How to measure (garment measurements)
Measure the finished garment laid flat on a smooth surface. Record the flat measurement and multiply across values by 2 to get the full circumference. Use a soft measuring tape and keep the fabric relaxed (unless instructed to measure stretched).
- Waist (flat): Lay waistband flat. Measure straight across the top edge from left to right. Multiply by 2 for the waist circumference. For elastic waists, note both relaxed and fully stretched measurements.
- Front rise: From the top center of the front waistband straight down to the crotch seam.
- Back rise: From the top center of the back waistband straight down to the crotch seam.
- Inseam: From the crotch seam down the inside leg to the bottom hem.
- Outseam / Total length: From the top of the waistband at the side seam down to the hem.
- Hip: Measure across the pant about 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) below the crotch seam where the garment is fullest, then multiply by 2.
- Thigh: Measure across the leg 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the crotch seam and multiply by 2.
- Knee: Measure across the leg at the knee level and multiply by 2.
- Hem / Cuff opening: Measure across the bottom hem (or cuff) and multiply by 2. For ribbed cuffs, you may also note the relaxed and stretched cuff widths.
