How to measure
Ring size — 3 easy methods
- Use an existing ring: place the ring flat and measure the inner diameter across the widest point (use calipers or a millimeter ruler). Match that diameter to a size chart (short chart below). Measure in millimeters for the most accurate match.
- String / paper strip method: wrap a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string snugly around the base of the finger, mark the overlap, then measure the marked length in millimeters — that length is the inner circumference. Convert circumference to diameter by dividing by π (diameter = circumference ÷ 3.1416) and compare to the size chart.
- Printable sizer or jeweler: use a professionally printed ring sizer (ensure the print is 100% scale) or visit a jeweler for the fastest, most accurate measurement.
Tips:
- Measure at the end of the day when fingers are warm and at their largest.
- If your knuckle is larger than the finger base, measure both and choose a size between those measurements or a half-size up to allow the ring to pass the knuckle.
- When in doubt, choose the larger size — resizing up is usually easier than down.
Measuring the stone & band
- Stone diameter: use calipers to measure the moissanite across its widest point (the girdle). A 5.00 ct round moissanite is typically about 11.2–11.5 mm across (varies with cut and maker).
- Band width: measure across the top surface of the band in millimeters. Typical engagement-band widths range from 1.5 mm (delicate) to 3.5 mm (substantial).
- Setting height: measure from the bottom of the ring shank to the top of the stone to find how high the setting sits off the finger — useful for matching a wedding band or for everyday comfort.
Quick US ring-size reference
| US Size | Inner Diameter (mm) | Inner Circumference (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | ≈ 14.8 | ≈ 46.5 |
| 5 | ≈ 15.7 | ≈ 49.3 |
| 6 | ≈ 16.5 | ≈ 51.9 |
| 7 | ≈ 17.3 | ≈ 54.4 |
| 8 | ≈ 18.2 | ≈ 57.1 |
| 9 | ≈ 18.9 | ≈ 59.4 |
| 10 | ≈ 19.8 | ≈ 62.2 |
Note: values are approximate. Always confirm measurements with a jeweler for the best fit.
Materials
Moissanite (center stone)
- Composition
- Silicon carbide (SiC), produced synthetically for jewelry.
- Durability
- Hardness ≈ 9.25 on the Mohs scale — excellent for daily wear and highly scratch resistant (diamond = 10).
- Optical properties
- High refractive index (~2.65–2.69) and strong dispersion (~0.104) produce exceptional brilliance and “fire.” May show slightly more colorful flashes than diamond.
- Color & clarity
- Available in near-colorless and colorless grades. Clarity is typically very high because moissanite is lab-grown.
- Ethics & sustainability
- Lab-created: conflict-free and generally considered an eco-friendlier alternative to mined stones.
Common metal options & hallmarks
- 14K gold
- Approx. 58.3% gold (durable, available in yellow/white/rose); a practical everyday choice.
- 18K gold
- Approx. 75% gold (richer color, softer than 14K; may scratch more easily).
- Platinum (Pt950)
- Usually 95% platinum — very durable, hypoallergenic, and retains weight and color (no rhodium plating needed).
- Sterling silver (925)
- 92.5% silver — more affordable but softer and more prone to scratches and tarnish.
- Rhodium plating
- White gold is often rhodium plated for bright white color; plating may need reapplication every 1–3 years depending on wear.
About this model — 6‑Prong Ring
This 5 carat moissanite solitaire is secured in a classic 6‑prong setting. Key model features:
- 6 prongs give extra security and a symmetrical, timeless look — ideal for round brilliant cuts.
- Open setting allows light from many angles, maximizing brilliance and fire.
- Versatile band — works with straight or contoured wedding bands; band width options typically range from delicate to bold depending on preference.
- Wear considerations: larger stones (5 ct) sit prominently; consider band width and setting height for comfort and practicality.
Typical specs (may vary by manufacturer): center stone 5.00 ct moissanite (round brilliant), 6-prong head, band width commonly 1.8–3.0 mm. Check the product page or ask the jeweler for exact measurements for the specific ring you are viewing.
Care Guide — keep it lovely longer
Everyday care
- Take the ring off for heavy work, gardening, contact sports and when using harsh household chemicals.
- Apply lotions, perfumes and cosmetics before putting the ring on to reduce build-up on the stone and metal.
- Store separately in a soft pouch or a compartmentalized jewelry box to avoid scratches.
Cleaning — at home (safe routine)
- Soak the ring for 10–20 minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Gently brush under the stone and around the prongs with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Rinse thoroughly under warm water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Professional care & special notes
- Moissanite itself is very durable and can generally tolerate ultrasonic or steam cleaners, but those cleaners can loosen or damage delicate settings or companion stones — if unsure, avoid them and opt for a jeweler’s cleaning.
- Have prongs and setting checked by a jeweler every 6–12 months; tighten or repair prongs as needed to keep the stone secure.
- If your ring is white gold, expect rhodium re-plating every 1–3 years depending on wear; platinum does not require plating.
Style Tips
- Balance the scale: a 5 carat center is substantial — a slimmer band (1.5–2.5 mm) often keeps the look elegant and balanced; a wider band creates a bolder style.
- Everyday vs. showpiece: choose a lower-profile setting if the ring will be worn daily; for special-occasion sparkle keep the higher prong setting for maximum light return.
- Stacking & wedding band pairing: for a snug fit, pair with a contoured or notched wedding band; plain slim bands or pavé bands complement a solitaire without competing with the center stone.
- Metal coordination: match the engagement ring metal to your wedding band and frequently worn jewelry for a cohesive look (white metals for cool palettes, yellow/rose for warm palettes).
- Styling cues: for a classic timeless look keep the solitaire alone; for extra glamour add a halo or side stones; mix textures (polished, hammered) in stacking bands for a modern effect.
Quick reminders: carat measures weight (1 carat = 0.20 grams); stone diameter and visual size vary by cut and maker. For exact dimensions, metal choice, and customization options, confirm the specific ring measurements with the retailer or jeweler before purchase.
